Inability to tackle corruption in Kenya affecting Kenya's economic growth
Article by Jewa Ian
Corruption is an impediment towards any country's economic growth. It is practiced through exchanging favors between two or more people. It can be financial favors or even sexual favours. It is a defect because it undermines people who can not afford such favors to miss what is rightfully theirs.
In Kenya corruption increases the cost of education to needy students where by bribery and connections play an important role in the recruitment of students in various institutions. Rich parents bribe the board members of the schools or even the principals to get an enrollment for their children. Rich parents also interfere with the grading system and give their kids fake grades as a result we get incompetent workers working for the government hence poor output and affect the growth of the economy negatively. Bribes and connections also affect the promotion of teachers in the education field.
On the other hand corruption increases inequality and decreases popular accountability and political responsiveness. This is seen when political aspirants bribe their way into the governmental seats. Immediately they win their start thinking of returning their wealth and even steal more money to become even wealthier than before. This produces rising frustration and hardship among citizens. As a result the graph of the economy of the country declines due to lack of accountability.
Corruption also discourages investment limits and economic growth this alters the composition of the government into spending often to the detriment of future economic growth. In other words corruption makes the government to make losses if the government institutions are leaking alot of finances illegally through corruption. This makes the government to use more money to fund the institutions that make losses and return the economic graph declines due to corruption.
